16 = "Nearby, you notice a pile of stones with a sack poking out from under them. A brief inspection reveals a sack of papers from Avernum. The poor victim's last action must have been to hide her package.";

18 = "You briefly inspect the papers. They are addressed to Thereza in Fort Emergence. Judging from the date, the package is several weeks late.";

22 = "As you walk near this dark, green pool, you notice bright motes of light floating just over the surface. They jump and dance, beckoning you closer.";

24 = "As you wend your way through the tall stalagmites choking this tunnel, you freeze. Guttural grunting echoes to you from just ahead.";
25 = "You edge ahead carefully until you can see what's there. There's a band of goblins sitting and guarding the tunnel. They haven't noticed you yet. Of course, if you jumped out and attacked them, they would notice it very quickly.";

27 = "The road near Fort Emergence is patrolled by a band of Avernite soldiers. They don't seem very alert. They don't need to be. If a serious attack ever comes, it won't be from this direction.";
28 = "When they see you, they march towards you. It looks like they want to talk to you.";

30 = "You turn around and run. After you put a safe distance between you and them, you look back. They've continued their patrol, shaking their heads at your odd behavior.";

32 = "The guards approach you. _Greetings! You're the next surface exploration crew, aren't you?_ They seem to have heard of you, and they're excited to meet you. You must be a celebrity.";
33 = "_Just so you know, if you're heading north, you should watch out for goblins and bandits. There has been some trouble up there. Keep your eyes open._";

35 = "The guards approach you eagerly. _You're the surface exploration crew! Have you been to the surface yet?_ You say that you have. _What's it like?_ They're desperately eager to hear news of what it's like up there. Do you indulge them?";

40 = "After a while, you excuse yourselves and move on. If you didn't, they would keep asking you questions for hours. They march away quickly, eager to pass on the choice gossip they've obtained.";

42 = "There is an infestation of chitrach larva back here. Chitrachs are large, vicious, giant insects. They were originally found in the vahnatai caverns, far below Avernum, but they have been slowly migrating upwards.";
43 = "If nothing is done, these larvae will become fully-grown chitrachs and cause all manner of problems. Something should be done.";

45 = "At first, these men looked like traveling merchants, perhaps bringing goods to Fort Emergence. When they get close and draw their weapons, however, you realize that they are bandits! There is about a dozen of them.";
46 = "Their leader says _Well, now. If it isn't an adventurer! And not any old adventurer, either, but the heroic surface explorer._ Gossip about your arrival must have gotten around. _Well, since you're so mighty, you can surely spare a few coins to help out a few lowly travelers, yes?_";

48 = "This group of bullies looks pretty tough. You doubt you will be able to beat them in a fight. For now.";

50 = "When they see that you don't have the money, the bandits laugh. _Such heroes as you, so poor? It's hard to see why Avernum put all its faith in you._ They move on, jeering at you as they go.";
